Costa Rican Roads

The roads are bad. Most are dirt and worse than any road you come across in the Uintas. A 4x4 is a must. I will never take a paved road for granted. Even if the road is paved its only 2 lanes wide, no shoulder and clogged with trucks. It took us 4 hours to drive 60 miles one day. Flooded roads and downed trees are another major problem in the rainy season. I always let a local drive through first or walk it to see how deep it was before proceeding. My wife joked that she was going to start wearing a sports bra when in the car due to all the bouncing. It was awesome to see the local surfers rock the Range Rovers with the surf rack and snorkel on the engine to forge the deeper river crossing.
