Starting to get real antsy for the snowboard season. Last year was one for the record books. I felt like I rode constant powder all year long from the start. My first powder day was October 27th and my last powder day was May 30th. I can honestly say it was one of my best seasons of my life! First time I can remember in a long time that I did not go out of State to shred. Why leave when the backyard is firing? I really want to take my tax return and...

...ride 10 days in Haines or Valdez this April.

...take the family on a shred trip through Washington and finally get my shred on for a Mt. Baker powder day and to hike out the legendary Hemispheres. I also wouldn't mind shredding Crystal, Alpental and Stevens.

...take the family on a shred trip through Colorado. Ride everything from Summit to Silverton and everything in between. I would love to show the kids where I shredded during my formative years. Maybe even skin up to one of many wonderful huts in Colorado as a family.

...take the family international. Japan, Chile, Peru and the Alps sound like a start.

...take the wife to NYC.

But to be honest I have to pay bills with it and be responsible. To all my friends who would do otherwise I salute you.

After riding the deepest day of the season at Snowbird on Friday (forgot my camera), where they got 20 inches in a 12 hour timeframe and 36 inches in 48 hours, we headed up to Powder Mountain. It was the best day I have ever had there! While storms and clouds planted themselves over the Cottonwoods we got to enjoy some sunshine.

I really didn't want to do this post. I try my best to pay it forward. Skullcandy is a local Utah company. I have friends that worked there from the start and snowboard for Skullcandy. But at the end of the day your products break! I have to let you guys know this! I am a working man/father/snowboarder with limited funds. I have never gotten or scored a free pair and have paid retail for every product I have bought from you guys. I am seriously out over $200 to Skullcandy this past year and have nothing to show for it!

Lets break it down. 4 of the 5 headphones my family has bought in the past year has broke within a month or two. Either both sides stop working or one side stops working. None of the headphones have even made it out for a hike. I hate to think how long they would last on a backcountry stroll! But the biggest heartbreak was the Pipe Ipod player. It was a present to my wife and within 3 days it wouldn't work with batteries. I thought no big deal it still works with the plug. Within a few months that also stopped working! I know I know, why not just warranty it? Cause I got too much other stuff in my day like snowboarding to try to hassle every single place I purchased headphones with to give me another pair that will break in a month. The hassle of doing a warranty takes away from my snowboard/family time and at this point it's just not worth it.

My Pop Pop passed away, he was 90 years old. I will be heading East to pay my respects. Snowboarding will have to be put on pause.

My passion for photography grew from spending weekends with him as a youngster. He would drive me around parts of Baltimore and Ellicott City looking for interesting photographs. We would go to abandoned waterfronts, shipyards, railroad yards, old forts, cemeteries, etc... looking for the next photograph. Half the fun was listening to his old WWII and depression era stories on the drive from one locale to another. He grew up in a Baltimore much different than the one of today. I enjoyed getting a glimpse into the past and his childhood.

He taught me everything about photography long before digital cameras were even invented. I would spend hours and hours in his darkroom learning how to develop film and making prints. He was like a professor and I was the student. When I was in 5th grade he drove me up to New York City to go to a photography convention. At the convention Kodak released TMAX film and I got one of the first rolls to shoot.

The thing he would always drill in my head was "The key to a good photograph is the photographer's eye, not his camera." I actually went through a phase where I would buy used crappy cameras from the thrift stores and see what kind of photographs I could make with the $5 dollar cameras. However he always made sure I had a working camera and was always generous with giving me his older camera when he got a new one. Recently I enjoyed coming home to visit and showing him my recent photographs. Thanks Pop Pop for the memories and the passion!

It's nice to have the same model snowboard for my splitboard and resort board. Pete at Unity Snowboards is making some quality splitboards and snowboards. After yesterday's hike I realized how nice it is to have metal edges and no T-bolts. The board rides like your regular setup!
